In 2018 we had the opportunity to partner with Circle Double J Ranch to purchase RC Tsunami 2 from Mark & Charlene Gilliland. RC Tsunami 2 is the ultimate out cross longhorn bull and here’s why!
Tsunami came out of Bob Larson’s breeding program in the Pacific Northwest. He features great conformation and a low horn set full of twist, length, and composite that is desired by any breeder. More importantly, his pedigree is free of Cowboy Chex, Jamakizm, JP Rio Grande, or Hunts Command Respect. When you are AI’ing like we have been in the past years, this is exactly the type of bull one adds to the next generation of their program.
Horn Measurement and Awards
RC Tsunami 2 features low lateral horns that reached 80″ TTT @ 41 months (3 1/2 years). This puts him amongst the elite few to reach that landmark in such a short time. His Horn Showcase accolades include winning the Tip to Tip, Total Horn, and Composite categories at the 2014 Ft. Worth Horn Showcase Championship and being named the Total Horn Champion in Lawton the following year. In 2018 an unofficial measurement put him at 84 1/4 inch making his tip to tip measurement just over 7 feet wide (2 meters).
RC Tsunami 2 comes from a results yielding pedigree and continues that tradition in his offspring. His damn Pacific Mermaid sold for $42K in the 2016 Legacy Sale. His full brother Outsider measured 45″ at 12 months and his full sister SHR Majestic Mermaid measured 72″ at 32 months. If you look at offspring bred by The Gilliland Ranch like GLR Top Mermaid Gal, you’ll see he’s throwing color in addition to those horn genetics. On the surface, the results look great. However, if you take a given auction and drill down into the statistics, Tsunami really stands out.
In the 2017 Rocky Mountain Select Sale there were 96 lots that sold for an average of $3081. If you look at the “Popular Sires” list, it contains some of the great bulls in the industry today. However, when you look at the “Popular Service Sires” list, RC Tsunami 2 is #2 on the list aligned with an average sale price of $4750. Historical genetics set the floor price on a given animal. Future genetics drive premiums; especially when they are out cross genetics!
We have a very limited supply of conventional semen available at $100 a straw. They are stored at Champion Genetics in Canton, TX; all buyers are responsible for shipping fees. Reach out to us at tsunami [ at ] grunranch.com if you are interested in adding Tsunami’s genetics to your herd.
